Script writing Example for APPEAL:

Legend/Note: The statements inside the bracket [Statement …] are instruction/guidance/hint/information for the Chair only and should not be read/announced to the audience.

A: I appeal from the decision of the chair.
Anyone: Second!

(a) State the question on the appeal:

Chair: The decision of the chair is appealed from.

The chair's ruling was that the proposed amendment to amend by adding "and new furniture for the reception area" is not germane to the main motion "That the executive committee is authorized to approve purchase of a new computer for the executive director."

The question is, "Shall the decision of the chair be sustained?"

(b) Chair begins debate on the appeal:

As the rules permit, the chair will speak first.

The chair believes that the amendment to amend by adding new furniture for the reception area exceeds the scope of the main motion because it relates neither to the purchase of computers nor to provisioning the executive director, and is therefore not germane.

Are you ready for the question?

(c) Debate on the appeal

Madam /Mr. President!

I believe the amendment is germane to the question. The main motion deals with purchases for headquarters. Purchasing additional furniture is certainly within that scope.

(d) Chair speaks in rebuttal:

The chair intends to speak in rebuttal. Are there others who wish to speak first?

[Pausing for response]

Upgrading the reception area is not related to providing a computer to the executive director.

(e) Put the question on the appeal:

The question is, "Shall the decision of the chair be sustained?"

Those in favor of sustaining the chair's decision, say aye. [Pausing for response] Those opposed to sustaining this decision, say no.

(f) Announce results:

The ayes have it and the decision of the chair is sustained. The amendment is out of order.

(g) Announce the business that follows:

The question is on the main motion "That the executive committee is authorized to approve purchase of a new computer for the executive director."

Are you ready for the question? [Pausing for response]       OR
